The histories of Goa Gajah.
The name of Goa Gajah is a curious name. Where there is no elephant habitat in Bali so why these caves call Goa Gajah? Even thought there are many motif elephant on the cave. The old Javanese Lontar-leaf chronicle, the Negarakertagama (written in A.D 1365) mentions that a high Buddhist official keep a hermitage at Lwa gajah (“Elephant river”).
This most likely refers to the Petanu River, which runs near the cave through a deep goerge. Perhaps the popular name Elephant originated with early visitor who named the cave after the river other theories that the Goa Gajah is made by the great architects namely Kebo Iwa which carving by his own nail.
The interior.
this interior wall is carving with elephant relic where the entrance of this hewn-rock cave, which opens to the south, is two meters high and one meter wide. The dark, musty interior is T –shaped. In the cave’s westernmost wing is one-meter-high, four-armed statue of elephant-god Ganesha holding an axe and broken tusk, symbols of his warlike nature, and a drinking vassel and beads, symbols of his wisdom.
